She has been accused of pumping out conspiracy theories and “cackling” at inappropriate times. Now experts say that Amazon’s Alexa is less adept than her biggest rivals as a virtual assistant.

In a test the automated assistant answered less than two thirds of questions correctly, far fewer than Apple’s Siri and the Google Assistant.

The 800 questions, which were designed to test each assistant’s ability and utility, were broken down into five categories. They looked at knowledge, such as “Where is the nearest coffee shop?” and “Can you order me more paper towels?”. The other categories involved giving directions, providing information on a sports fixture and asking for a reminder to call a friend later in the day.
