Savannah will be the final stop on comedian Chonda Pierce’s new tour “Getting Back to Funny” at 7 p.m. May 13 at Calvary Baptist Temple. The show also features Christian musician Karyn Williams.

While Pierce (aka “Queen of Clean”) is known as the No. 1-selling female comedian in the world, she says it’s taken her several years to feel funny again.

“I’ve always been able to come up with a joke or two,” she says. “But after my husband died, I felt like I was just kind of floating through everything. I feel funny again. I feel back to normal — well, as normal as you can be as a widow.”

She adds that her audiences must be feeling her return to true laughs, since the “Getting Back to Funny” tour has become her most successful tour ever. “We’ve sold out in every city so far.”

Pierce says a lot of her new material for the tour centers on what is going on in her life now, like having friends coax her into online dating.

“You know, being alone is not horrible,” she says. “My girlfriends were really pushy for me to date at first, but now they’ve relaxed. The online world is not for me; it needs to be organic. If God can part the Red Sea, he can put a man on my porch.”

And she also tackles politics and social media in her new tour.

“Believe it or not, I think there can be a funny side to politics. And let’s face it, we all need to laugh these days.

“… And I love how comedy can teach us something about how our whole life is online now … I try to stay as current as I can, and I always try to find the lighter side of life.”

While comedy can be known as a seedy business, Pierce says she wants to show everyone why she made the decision to push back against that idea and be known as a stand-up comedian and a born-again Christian.

“The devil can influence everything in the world, including comedy, but you can be a follower of Christ and be a comedian.”

Pierce adds that she purposely made Savannah her last stop of the tour so she could enjoy one of her favorite things — food.

“I love Savannah. You can spend four days there just eating.”
