BUKIT MERTAJAM: Spelling mistakes on three Festival of Lights greeting billboards in Machang Bubok, where the word Deepavali was spelt as “Deepevali”, were quick to be spotted and rectified by the assemblyman who put them up.
But not before it became a topic on social media.
Facebook user SJ Sharma said: “The typo aside, I absolutely love it!”, while another user Murali Ram described the typo as “deeper than Deepavali” and said it was funny.
And, as it turns out, the use of “Deepevali” is not so uncommon, after all, as results form an Internet search proved that the word, spelt this way, is used in many websites.
Machang Bubok assemblyman Lee Khai Loon said he noticed the spelling mistakes right after the billboards were installed on Friday (Nov 2), and ordered that corrections be made immediately.
“The billboards in Cherok To’Kun, Alma and Permatang Tinggi were installed on Friday, but the designer made a typo mistake.
“Instead of reprinting the whole billboard, which would be costly, we took the environment-friendly approach of just correcting the one letter.
“I apologise to those who were offended by the mistake, but together we sincerely look forward to a peaceful and harmonious festive celebration,” Lee said.
