Scott Morrison cancels COAG, tells party members to end stupid games

Scott Morrison has cancelled a meeting early next month with state and territory leaders, in part because the leadership upheaval has left the government ill-prepared to settle funding deals on public hospitals and schools.

Mr Morrison telephoned premiers and chief ministers on Tuesday night to cancel the October 4 Council of Australian Governments meeting.

A spokesman said there was another meeting planned for December 12 and the reform deals on health, schools and Aboriginal disadvantage should be ready to be finalised by then.

The government has not yet ended its funding dispute with the Catholic school sector which stemmed from a proposed new agreement.

A planned leaders’ summit on October 2 and 3 aimed at reducing violence against women will go ahead in Adelaide as scheduled.

A spokesman said the abandonment of the National Energy Guarantee was not a factor.

The government wants the states to persist with their part of the NEG that ensures energy reliability but has scrapped its part of the deal which was to legislate emissions targets for the energy sector.

The development came after Mr Morrison spent
